1Berita News – The Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that an eruption has occurred, emitting volcanic ash up to 800 meters high from the crater of Mount Semeru in Malang Regency and Lumajang Regency, East Java Province.

Mount Semeru Observation Post officer Yadi Yuliandi stated that the eruption occurred at 06:02 AM WIB with a medium-intensity ash column ranging from white to gray, heading southeast.

“The maximum amplitude was 22 millimeters and the duration was 131 seconds,” said Yadi in a report received in Jakarta on Monday.

PVMBG advises the public not to engage in any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the eruption center.

Beyond that distance, people are also not allowed to engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is potential for hot cloud expansion and lava flow up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

PVMBG also advises people not to engage in activities within a five-kilometer radius from the peak of Mount Semeru due to the risk of rock projectiles.

On February 11, 2024, from 00:00 to 24:00 WIB, Mount Semeru recorded 88 times of eruption earthquakes, eight times of avalanche earthquakes, 19 times of emission earthquakes, 22 times of harmonic earthquakes, and three times of distant tectonic earthquakes.

Meanwhile, on February 12, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB, Mount Semeru experienced 19 times of eruption earthquakes, one avalanche earthquake, and 11 emission earthquakes.

Mount Semeru is the most active volcano in Indonesia. Throughout last year, the highest peak in Java Island experienced 29,131 eruptions.

PVMBG continues to visually and instrumentally monitor Mount Semeru from two volcano observation posts located in Sumber Wuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency; and in Argosuko Village, Ampelgading District, Malang Regency.
