1Berita English – Prince Crown Frederik has officially ascended to the throne of Denmark on Sunday, January 14, assuming the title of King Frederik X. This transition occurred as his mother, Queen Margrethe II, gracefully relinquished her reign after leading Denmark for an impressive 52 years. At 83 years old, Queen Margrethe II is one of the longest-reigning monarchs in Europe.
The queen expressed that the timing was appropriate to pass on the responsibility to the next generation. Despite the absence of a traditional coronation ceremony, the event is expected to draw attention, with recent polls indicating strong public support for the monarchy.
Denmark’s monarchy, with a history spanning over a millennium, lacks conventional coronation rituals. Consequently, world leaders and high-ranking officials are anticipated to be absent from the ceremony. Queen Margrethe II ascended to the throne on January 14, 1972, following the death of her father, King Frederik IX, making her the longest-reigning monarch in Europe after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II last year.
With Prince Crown Frederik officially becoming King Frederik X, his wife, Princess Mary, will assume the role of Queen Consort of Denmark, making her the first Australian to hold such a position. As per the constitution, members of the Danish Royal Family have limited roles in state affairs, with the highest authority residing in the hands of the parliament. However, royal signatures are required for the formalization of new laws.
Additionally, both the King and Queen of Denmark play essential roles internationally as ambassadors and representatives of the nation. The transition marks a significant moment in Danish history, reflecting a continuation of the monarchy’s role in the constitutional framework and global diplomacy.
