1Berita – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has expressed his desire to return to his hometown in Solo, Central Java, after completing his term in October 2024. He admits that he wants to become an ordinary citizen after serving as president for 10 years.
“Yes, become an ordinary citizen, return to Solo as an ordinary citizen,” said Jokowi after visiting a traditional market in Purworejo, Central Java, on Tuesday (2/1).
When asked if he is interested in becoming the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Jokowi reiterated his intention to return to Solo after 2024.
“Return to Solo, become an ordinary citizen, that’s it,” he emphasized.
The possibility of Jokowi becoming the UN Secretary-General was a hot topic in early 2023. At that time, a video circulated on Facebook claiming that President Jokowi had been directly appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as his successor after stepping down in December 2026.
However, on February 5, 2023, the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Informatics labeled this information as misinformation or fake news.
In mid-November 2022, the Chairman of the PDIP Central Executive Board, Said Abdullah, also considered Jokowi worthy of becoming the UN Secretary-General after completing his term in 2024. He stated that Jokowi’s extraordinary service and legacy make him deserving of the position.
Said mentioned that Jokowi has built an extensive international network in the last 10 years, which is crucial for Indonesia and the world in facing climate change. Additionally, he stated that Jokowi has demonstrated his leadership capacity on national issues, particularly in advocating environmental concerns.
