    Inflation in Indonesia Reaches 2.61 Percent Throughout 2023

    1Berita – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) announced that inflation reached 0.41 percent throughout December 2023. With this development, year-on-year (yoy) inflation surpassed 2.61 percent, and year-to-date (ytd) calendar-year inflation also stood at 2.61 percent.

    Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, noted an increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 113.59 to 116.56 on a year-on-year basis.

    “The monthly inflation rate in December 2023 was the highest throughout the year. The largest contributor to monthly inflation was the food, beverage, and tobacco group, with an inflation rate of 1.07 percent and a contribution of 0.29 percent. The main contributor to inflation within this group was red chili, accounting for 0.06 percent of inflation,” said Amalia during a press conference at the BPS office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (2/1).

    “Other significant contributors to inflation in December 2023 were jewelry gold with a contribution of 0.11 percent and air transport tariffs with a contribution of 0.08 percent,” she added.

    Amalia detailed that the largest contributors to year-on-year inflation were the food, beverage, and tobacco group, amounting to 1.60 percent. Key commodities contributing to inflation in this group included rice, red chili, kretek filter cigarettes, bird’s eye chili, and garlic.

    Meanwhile, the largest contributors to monthly inflation were food, beverage, and tobacco, with an inflation rate of 1.07 percent and a contribution of 0.29 percent. The primary contributor to inflation in this category was red chili, accounting for 0.06 percent of inflation.

    “Overall, 85 out of 90 CPI cities experienced inflation, with 33 cities experiencing inflation higher than the national average. Meanwhile, 5 other cities experienced deflation, all located in the Sumatra region,” she explained.

    Based on provinces, the highest annual inflation in Java was in Sumenep at 5.08 percent and in Bandung City at 4.31 percent. In Bali, the highest was in Singaraja at 4.31 percent, while in Sumatra, Tanjung Pandan had the highest inflation at 3.80 percent.
