1Berita News – The court in Pakistan has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 10 years in prison for corruption.
Khan’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, confirmed the court’s decision against the couple.
“Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have been sentenced. Bushra Bibi has not been detained,” Safdar said, quoted by AFP on Wednesday (31/1).
The court reached the verdict after Khan was found guilty of corruption charges, including receiving gifts while serving as prime minister.
Khan served as prime minister from August 2018 to April 2022.
A spokesperson for Khan’s party, Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), criticized the decision.
“Another sad day in the unfolding history of the judiciary system,” he said.
This verdict comes after the court sentenced Khan to 10 years in prison for misuse of diplomatic cables on Tuesday.
In August 2023, he was also sentenced to three years in prison for corruption. This conviction also barred him from contesting the national elections.
The sentencing of Khan comes a week before the general elections scheduled for February 8.
PTI has stated that they will challenge the court’s decision.
