1Berita – The term Nepo Baby has recently resonated widely after several news outlets bestowed the nickname upon the second vice-presidential candidate in Indonesia, Gibran Rakabuming Raka.
Gibran earned this moniker as he is the son of the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi). He officially entered the 2024 presidential election, running alongside Prabowo Subianto.
Nepo Baby itself is a shorthand for nepotism baby. This nickname is typically used to label individuals who are perceived to have a successful career due to the support of their famous parent or family.
Long before Gibran was called Nepo Baby, Vice President of the Philippines Sara Duterte had already been given the same moniker. Sara is the daughter of the 16th President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte.
According to Reuters, since 2007, Sara Duterte has been elected and served as Vice Mayor of Davao City. She held that position until June 30, 2010.
In 2010, Duterte became the Mayor of Davao City, succeeding her father. She became the first female mayor of Davao, serving until June 30, 2013.
Three years later, on June 30, 2016, Sara once again took on the role of Mayor of Davao City until March 17, 2022. Afterward, she ran for Vice President of the Philippines alongside Ferdinand Marcos Jr, also known as Bongbong, and successfully secured the position.
According to Nikkei Asia, Sara Duterte’s success as the Vice President of the Philippines provides her with a foundation to continue her father’s legacy and possibly make her the strongest vice president in the modern history of the country.
