1Berita – The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has officially recognized Eid al-Fitr as a significant religious holiday.

According to documents on the UNESCO website, this recognition comes in response to proposals from over 30 countries, including Indonesia.

“The recognition and celebration of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha by UNESCO underscores the organization’s commitment to promoting cultural understanding and mutual respect,” reads a statement in the document.

The statement further emphasizes, “This stance highlights UNESCO’s commitment to embracing diversity and acknowledging the richness of cultural heritage and religious practices among its member states.”

UNESCO has also stated that this recognition aims to strengthen interfaith dialogue. By acknowledging both of these major holidays, the UN body seeks to promote dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect.

The document also outlines proposals to recognize and commemorate Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha with the aim of celebrating the richness of cultural and religious diversity among member countries.

Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are significant religious holidays for Muslims around the world.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, while Eid al-Adha commemorates the great sacrifice.

In response to this recognition, the Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO under the Ministry of Education and Culture (KNIU) expressed gratitude.

“Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), upon Indonesia’s proposal and with the support of over 30 countries, UNESCO has recognized Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as significant religious holidays,” said the Ministry of Education and Culture in a statement on Wednesday (24/3).

One point in this recognition is that UNESCO will not hold any official meetings at its headquarters in Paris during the Muslim holidays.
