1Berita English – Government of Solo has taken a proactive stance against the circulation of dog meat by announcing its intention to issue a Circular Letter jointly with the Secretary of the Region.

While awaiting the formal issuance of the Circular Letter, the Department of Agriculture, Food Security, and Livestock in Solo is actively engaging in education and awareness campaigns about the dangers associated with consuming dog meat.

The upcoming Circular Letter is expected to provide guidance and recommendations rather than enforce strict measures, emphasizing the appeal for voluntary compliance and refraining from the sale of dog meat.

The local authorities, particularly Nugroho Isbandijarso from the Department of Agriculture, highlight the significance of ongoing educational efforts to inform the public about the potential health risks associated with consuming dog meat, including the transmission of bacteria.

Despite the existence of approximately 27 hidden dog meat stalls in Solo, efforts are being made to discourage and educate both sellers and the public about the negative consequences of this illegal trade.

However, the challenge lies in the deeply ingrained cultural preference for consuming dog meat in Solo, making it difficult to completely halt its sale.

The recent thwarting of a shipment of 226 dogs by the Semarang Police suggests an acknowledgment of the illegal dog meat trade. The enforcement of legal actions against five suspects involved in the attempted delivery underscores the seriousness of the issue.

The broader challenge remains addressing the cultural preference for dog meat consumption and finding sustainable solutions that respect cultural practices while prioritizing public health and animal welfare.
